DIY Sopranino Ukulele Part 5 – Neck block

Got the neck block shaped today. This was interesting to make as it has different shapes at top and bottom – both need to meet the sides in a complex curve.

I marked out the shapes on top and bottom, then connected the ends of the lines.

Initial shaping with saw and plane
Gouging out the sides – very enjoyable!
Using a curved scraper to get the cut smooth
Finished block
Seems like a good fit

I was origininally going to shape this with the sander but gouge and scraper seemed like fun so I went with that. It was most enjoyable and the result is pretty accurate.

I think the sides may need tweaking slightly to fit the block but the gaps are small. I haven’t worked out how I clamp the setup for gluing yet – that could be trickly…
