Centreboard bolt

I know that the centreboard is missing varnish, and it hurts to put wood into water with no protection. So I needed to get the board out. First stage of this is getting the bolt out. On a Wanderer this sits under the floorboards and has two nuts – presumably the second is a lock-nut.

The lock nut came off easily enough but the second nut seemed a strange shape. Spanners and wrenches wouldn’t grip it so I cut it off:

Aldi multi-tool

The Aldi multi-tool is a well-engineered bit of kit. I didn’t have a blade for cutting steel so I used a diamond cutting blade – very slow but it did the job.

The nut certainly wasn’t going to come off any other way. I suspect that someone had put an ordinary steel nut on here.
